Our Community

Creating Safer, More Supportive Environments is a Shared Responsibility

Step UP! is designed for people and organizations who want more than awareness—they want practical, thoughtful ways to turn values into action in real situations.

Group discussionOur community reflects the belief that creating safer, more supportive environments is a shared responsibility, and that effective bystander intervention requires understanding people, context, relationships, and systems—not just scripts or one-size-fits-all responses.

Although Step UP! is used across a wide range of settings, everyone who engages with the program works from the same evidence-based foundation. The framework supports perspective taking, values-based decisions and courage, prosocial behavior and kindness, and skill-building grounded in social and emotional learning. Participants learn how to assess situations thoughtfully, consider individual differences and relationships, and choose responses that fit the moment—using the 5 Steps to Intervention and the 5 Ds as flexible tools rather than rigid rules.

Faculty, Staff, and Facilitators

Educators, student affairs professionals, coaches, residence life staff, campus safety, HR professionals, and other facilitators use Step UP! to lead conversations and trainings that are credible, adaptable, and grounded in research. The program supports facilitators in navigating complex situations where power dynamics, institutional culture, and community norms matter. Rather than prescribing a single “right” response, Step UP! equips facilitators to help participants analyze situations through a social-ecological lens—considering individuals, relationships, and broader systems—while still providing concrete strategies people can use immediately.

Students

Students engage with Step UP! as both individuals and community members. The program recognizes that students bring different backgrounds, identities, experiences, and values into every situation. Step UP! helps students build confidence to notice when something isn’t right, interpret what’s happening, and take action in ways that align with who they are and what they care about. By emphasizing perspective taking, kindness, and thoughtful decision-making, students learn how to step up in everyday moments as well as higher-risk situations.

Businesses and Organizations

Workplaces and organizations use Step UP! to strengthen cultures of accountability, respect, and shared responsibility. The framework translates seamlessly beyond campus settings because it focuses on human behavior, social influence, and decision-making within systems. Participants learn how organizational norms, leadership signals, and bystander behavior shape outcomes—and how small, timely actions can prevent harm, support colleagues, and reinforce values.

A Shared Foundation Across Contexts

What unites the Step UP! community is not a single audience, but a shared approach.

Whether someone is a student, a facilitator, or a professional in a workplace or organization, Step UP! supports navigating complexity rather than oversimplifying it. The program acknowledges that situations are nuanced, people are imperfect, and context always matters—while still offering practical strategies for action.
